I’m going to write something that may come across as a little bit earnest and/or corny and that’s fine, it is earnest and/or corny.

Tonight I went to visit a friend and cousin named Ellen Singer who is in the hospital because she is dying of cancer. I don’t know what kind of cancer exactly because I’m an idiot — I should know because I’ve spent lots of time with her over the past, say, three years that she’s been living with cancer. But now it’s spreading through her intestines more aggressively than the doctors thought and a recent surgery revealed that she only has a few months to live.

That is all backstory, as is this: Ellen is 60. She is my dad’s second cousin (her father and my dad’s mother were cousins). They grew up together in Oklahoma and were close as children. They still are, though she’s a lot closer with my mom, who considers her a best friend, probably because they’re both plain-talking, fiery ladies who know what’s what and aren’t afraid to tell you. And they both know what it’s like to be sick.

My mom spent the day at the hospital with Ellen and I didn’t get there until 7:30 this evening, so I didn’t see my mom, but my dad was there and the three of us sat quietly with an old friend of Ellen’s for about two hours and talked. Ellen is in good spirits because she’s that kind of person and was extremely lucid (compared to other days when she’s been pretty drugged up, I’m told).

The point I eventually want to make is that I had a nice time. I realized it after when someone asked me, “How was the hospital” and felt stupid for asking before I could respond, “It was actually very nice.”

And that was weird. I realized tonight that some of the nicest moments I’ve spent with my family over the last five years have been in hospital rooms. And that’s because we talk to each other. It’s quiet and calm. No one spends too much time on his smart phone because it seems rude and disrespectful. Everyone is on best behavior — upbeat in an effort to distract the person who is, at best, attached to an IV in a creepy bed, and at worst, well, a lot worse.

So you all sit around tell stories — maybe stories that a lot of people in the room may have already heard. Or you talk about dead relatives, or relatives who aren’t there, or try to remember the last time you were all together. There is nothing more important in those moments than the things in life that are actually important — kindness, humor, compassion. Work doesn’t matter. The dinner party you’re missing doesn’t matter. Any anger, regret, and anxiety that might hog your emotional awareness on a regular evening is muted by this reality of a sick person you care about demonstrating her mortality. So it’s very simple. You are just there. And you are good to the people around you.

It’s no one’s fault that we don’t achieve that same simplicity in interaction among our family more often. It’s just that there are usually distractions. But since I now realize some of my favorite, meaningful family interactions have been in hospital rooms, maybe that knowledge will bring some comfort to me when it’s my turn in the bed with the IV.
